The character, before the company — Vibriofischeri, biomimicry artist.

Before it was a name, it was a research finding. A two-year study of biomimicry strategies — twenty-one of them, gathered with a small team across ecosystems on several continents — turned up the Hawaiian bobtail squid: a bacterium living inside it, Vibrio fischeri, that lets the squid glow in the dark. Alone, one bacterium is invisible — it releases a small signal into the world and nothing happens. But once enough of them gather, every signal fires at once, and the whole colony lights up as a single organism. This mechanism, called quorum sensing, is the character’s whole philosophy: nothing meaningful happens alone. Light is something a population makes together, once there are enough of them in relationship with each other.

The name became a signature on December 6, 2011, on a watercolor titled LOVE FLOW, painted on a coastal dune in El Cuyo, Yucatán — the science of it already years old by then.

Vibriofischeri signs every piece with a single mark: [FF], short for Fast Forward — not moving faster, but finding the right rhythm to evolve, together, as a species. It turns FREE into [FF]REE, FUEGO into [FF]UEGO, LIFE into LI[FF]E.
